2005 U.S. Angler’s Choice North Central Classic held on Kentucky Lake

Written by Angler’s Choice Director Steve Jennings

With over $175,000 in cash and prizes more than 400 of the best fishermen in the Eastern United States of America traveled to Moor’s Resort on beautiful Kentucky Lake to cast for cash in the U.S. Angler’s Choice Region 3 Tournament of Champions.  As is the norm with October tournaments the good Lord gave the fishermen two weeks of sunshine and unseasonably warm weather with record breaking high temperatures.  But by the first day of the tournament things had changed with a cold front coming from the west the temperature dropped and the rain started to fall on the first day of the tournament.  All good fishermen know what happens next the bluebird skies and the cold winds blow, and that is exactly what happened on Saturday.  The best teams all adapt to the conditions and catch fish.

Adapt is just what the team of Randy Stone and Rodney Tidwell did.  They were the big winners this year with a two day total of 38.15 pounds.  On Friday this team came to the scales with 13.05 pounds of fish.  But on Saturday the good Lord gave them a huge bag of fish that hit the scales at 25.14 pounds, which was the biggest bag weighed in during the two-day event.  What is even more incredible is that they had two smallmouth over six pounds!  This team reported running the Evinrude-powered Triton to the upper end of Kentucky Lake to catch their fish on a spinnerbaits in four to six feet of water.  Randy reported that they won two new Falcon rods at the registration meeting and they fished with these rods to take the win.  For their win they took home a BassCat Cougar with a 225 HP Optimax.

Second place and a BassCat Classic with a 200HP Optimax went to the team of Shawn Penn and Terry Bolton.  They turned in a two-day total of 34.82 pounds Shawn reported that they caught some of their fish on a spook but most came on a spinnerbait.  This awesome team reported running to the mid-section of Kentucky Lake to catch their fish on both the main lake and back in the pockets.  Shawn said they focused on wood in four to five feet of water. Shawn stated that Angler’s Choice did a great job of running an awesome tournament. Ranger, Evinrude Jet-a-Marina and Luhr Jensen sponsor Terry.

Third place went to the father and son team of Ronnie and Van Siress (age 72) with a two- day total of 30 pounds even.  Most of their fish fell victim to a chug bug in four to five of water.  For their 30 pounds of fish they received the keys to a Mercury powered BassCat Sabre.

Lonzo Moore of East Tennessee was the luckiest fishermen at the tournament this weekend because he was the man that took home the draw prize of a brand new Mercury powered BassCat boat.  His wife stated that the Lord looks after his own and that is a very true statement.

Fourth place went to the team of Daryl and Adam Kazee from the Fort Loudoun Super Team Trail in East Tennessee.  Daryl, the seasoned angler, said that he caught most of his fish on Carolina-rig with a Zoom brush-hog.  Daryl reported running his Yamaha powered Blazer to the lower end of Kentucky Lake to catch his fish.  Daryl and Adam had consistent limits each day with 14.70 on Friday and 14.60 on Saturday to give this team a 29.30 pounds total.

Fifth place went to the team of Danny York and Chuck Round.  This team had a good day on Friday bringing five fish that weighed in at 12.87 pounds.  This talented team went out and did the same on Saturday and came to the scales with a nice bag of fish that hit the scales at 14.10 pounds for a two-day total of 26.97.

Sixth place went to the team of Michael Potter and Vince Ingle of East Tennessee. This team reported catching their fish Friday on a top water spook.  They continued on this pattern Saturday and brought to the scales a limit bass weighing 12.07 lbs.  This East Tennessee team finished the two-day tournament in 6th place with a total weight of 25.10 lbs.  They would like to thanks their sponsors:  Triton Boats, Minors Marine in Morristown, TN (http://www.minorsmarine.com), Cobra Handle Rods, Foothills Outdoors, and B & M Spinnerbaits and Bill Freemen of Freeman and Associates.
