The third of seven
qualifying events for the Southern Illinois division of Angler’s
Choice was held on Rend Lake. The week leading up to the event many had
reported the fishing to be somewhat tough. On this day however there
were eleven limits weighed and several fish over five pounds brought to
the scales.
The money generated
from late fee’s help toward providing the Angler’s with a dinner as
they weighed-in. Teams were treated to barbeque hamburgers, hot dogs and
potato salad at the weigh-in. We plan on having more cookouts throughout
the year as funds allow.
The first place team of Steve Schimsa and Roger Beczkala from Fenton,
Missouri found their trip to Rend to be more than enjoyable. The team
used Crock-O-Gator tubes and jigs in shallow water of 1 to 2 feet around
the bushes, with the exception of their largest fish of the day, which
weighed 5.26lbs and was taken in six feet of water off of rocks. The
team culled through several keeper fish during the day on their way to
amassing a total weight of 14.91lbs. They take home checks totaling

The second place team of Keith Cloe and Chuck Gardner of West Frankfort,
Illinois used tubes and spinner baits to boat their keepers. The team
fished mid lake flipping and pitching bushes to catch their five fish
limit. They ended the day with a total weight of
13.47lbs and earned checks totaling $1,260.00 for the day. Their
interview was not available and the above information was recalled from
the weigh-in interview.
The third place team of Mike Goesman and Bobby Atchison from Sesser,
Illinois used Lunker Lure jigs around the bushes. The fish were
positioned in one to two feet of water and a slow presentation was key.
The team culled their way to a best five weighing 13.25lbs and earned
checks totaling $791.00 on the day. The team is sponsored by: Jetta

Big
Bass goes to the team of Darren Frazier from Anna, Illinois and Scott
Williams of Oran, Illinois. The team used mostly black and blue Rattle
Back Jigs and Lunker Lure Buzz Baits throughout the day but the big fish
was fooled by an unnamed crankbait. The fish weighed in at an impressive
6.15lbs and anchored the fourth place position with a total weight of
12.84lbs. The team earned checks totaling $890.00 for the day at Rend.
