It was a HOT one at
Smithland Pool with temps in the mid nineties and air that so thick you
seemed to be wearing it. The fish however seemed to find this to their
liking as many limits were brought to the scales accompanied with some
quality fish for the river this time of year. It seems as though the
main channel may actually “get right” this summer as the pool has
been stable and the water clarity is very good.
The first place team of Vernon Williams from Pittsburg, Illinois and
Steve May of Marion, Illinois may not of liked the weather but things
got a lot cooler as they hoisted their bag to the scales. The team had a
five fish limit that saw the scales reach 13.88lbs! The team found their
fish in shallow water and caught them primarily on Lunker Lure buzz
baits. They reported culling through many fish throughout the day as
they received their checks totaling $1,785.00 for their best five. The

The second place team of Randy Stewart from Marion, Illinois and Terry
Burks of Benton, Illinois culled through 15 keepers during the day.
Their fish were taken on spinnerbaits and topwater. They concentrated
their efforts on the main river fishing stumps and laydowns. The teams
best five saw the scales hit 13.12lbs and earned them checks totaling
$1,168.00 for the day! The team is sponsored by: Lunker Lure Hawg
Caller, RC Lures and Newbold Lures.

Third place goes to the team of Mike Goesman and Bobby Atchison from
Sesser, Illinois. The team flipped Lunker Lure Rattle Back jigs in water
depths of six to eight feet to catch their fish. The team fished the
main river the entire day and put a five fish limit together weighing
12.77lbs that was anchored by the Lunker Lure Big Bass of the day
weighing 6.19lbs! With all checks totaled the team earned $1,237.00 for
