2004 Classic

Smithland Pool 07-25-05

The heat was on as anglers took to the water for the fifth of seven qualifying events for the Southern Illinois division. With high temperatures hovering near 100 degrees extra precautions were taken to assure a healthy release. The point race had also heated up as teams are nearing the end of the season and searching for valuable classic points. The wind kept the physical heat bearable but the standings only got more interesting as the day came to an end.

The first place team of Troy Lowery from Breeze, Illinois and his alternate Danny Kahrhoff of Salem, Illinois found the day in the sun to their liking as they put together an impressive five fish limit weighing 12.72lbs. The team used top water baits throughout the entire day to take their fish. They fished both the main river and creeks and found their fish located in very shallow water of two feet or less. Cover was not key as the fish seemed to be on bare banks feeding on shad. For their efforts the team takes home checks totaling $1,500.00 for the place. The team is sponsored by: Affordable Tackle. Great Job Guys!!

The second place team of Bill Penrod from Harrisburg, Illinois and his alternate Butch Craig of Stonefort, Illinois was only able to bring four keeper fish to the scales but they were quality bites for the river during this time of year. Their fish were located around stumps in five to ten feet of water and came up on spinner baits and spooks. The teams four fish weighed 10.80lbs and earned them checks totaling $1,265.00 for the day. The team is sponsored by: McCabe’s Marine.

The third place team of David Guill from Royalton, Illinois and Greg Berner of Elkville, Illinois fished creeks throughout the day focusing on channel swings. They used black and blue jigs and tubes working them from the bank out to ten feet. The team brought a five fish limit to the scales weighing 10.74lbs and earned checks totaling $785.00 on the day. The team is sponsored by: Harrisons Sport Shop, Solar Bat, Dunn’s Sporting Goods and Falcon Rods.

The Lunker Lure Big Bass of the day goes to the team of Cris McCabe and Stanley Barnett both from Carterville, Illinois. The fish was fooled by a jig and hit during the middle of the day. It was located in shallow water and positioned on wood. The healthy largemouth weighed 4.67lbs and it along with 4 others also put the team in fifth place. They take home checks totaling $842.00 for the Lunker Lure Big bass and the position. The team is sponsored by: Lunker Lure and Cotton Mouth Jigs.
