Smithland 8-14

It was a soggy start for the August 14th qualifier at Smithland pool. Heavy thunderstorms rumbled through much of the area overnight and ended just prior to take off. Teams would not detoured however as 38 boats launched on what turned out to be a very nice day. The points race had really heated up going into the event and it only got closer at days end as the top three teams all traded positions and it is up for grabs going into the Wild Card event September 18th at Rend Lake.

The first place team of Dan Kahrhoff of Breeze, Illinois and Brien Vaughn of Salem, Illinois went deep on the main river to get their bites. The team used a run and gun type approach as they hit around twenty spots during the day. Their five fish limit was taken on jigs and weighed in at an impressive midsummer weight for the Ohio River of 12.45lbs. The teams’ stringer was anchored by a healthy main river largemouth weighing 4.43lbs, which earned the Lunker Lure Big Bass of the day honors. With all checks totaled the team earned $2,255.00 on the day. The team is sponsored by: Affordable Tackle. Great Job Guy’s!

Second place goes to the team of Scott Scheich and Todd Taylor both from Freeburg, Illinois. They started the day fishing creeks and got a limit in the boat early. They then went to the main river looking to upgrade their catch. Upgrade they did as they culled through ten keepers during the day and boating two of their nicest fish in the last hour of competition. The teams fish were taken mainly on crank baits however one was fooled by a jig. Their best five saw the scales reach 11.64lbs and earned them checks totaling $1,157.00 on the day. The team is sponsored by: Taylor Marine in Belleville, IL.

The third place team of Terry Wilson from Carbondale, Illinois and Bruce Bean of Desoto, Illinois pitched unnamed plastics to catch their fish. They stated the bite seemed to be a little deeper than normal for the river as their fish were taken in eight to ten feet of water and were located on the channel breaks. The fish were holding near stumps and laydowns in this deeper water. The team culled through ten keeper fish with their best five weighing 10.27lbs and earning them checks totaling $708.00
